Portlander Greg Tozian, author of a vibrant new collection of stories called Doll Head Eater, proves he can peel grapes with prose and dispel our illusions better than a favorite, wacky uncle.
“Think of middle America spinning fast and out of control. Think of a Raymond Carver story immersed in alien radioactive ooze. Think of a trailer park Fahrenheit 451 or George Orwell on acid… You just don’t know what you’re going to get on your plate in Doll Head Eater.”
… in Your Flesh #40, 1998/99 Fall/Winter Edition
Gregory Tozian is a twisted fuck. Doll Head Eater is a collection of short stories shot straight outta Tozian’s fetid imagination. While the short-short ones (usually less than a page or so) leave you gasping for air, it’s the lengthy ones that’ll downright smother you in a deep layer cake of grease, dirty juju and bad karma slime. The centerpiece of Tozian’s down and mostly out loser parade is a story called “Shot in the Face” which is a necrophiliac-tinged cop story that slowly descends down a murky staircase of ritualistic sacrifice and murder. Other notable gems are “Enough Rope,” a psychotic sexual romp, and “Talkin’ ‘Bout My Girl,” which reads like it was stolen right out of Burrough’s semen-smeared but still natty Naked Lunch slacks. Tozian tends to keep everything tight and intense so Doll Head Eater is a real quick but totally engaging read.
